2009 Richmond Cup Champions!

Edmonton Prevail was crowned reigning Richmond Cup Champions yesterday in Kitchener Ontario as they dealt Impact kids their first CXBL loss in the finals.  After falling to the Toronto Rage in their first game on friday, Prevail had to go the long way around to make it to the final.  After showing the Cowboys the door, Prevail made a huge comeback run being down 10-5 to Kingston with 14 minutes to go.  They hung 5 unanswered flags to tie, then in a one on one shootout overtime, Darcy Schlichenmayer took his team to victory and to Sunday.  First up - fellow western conference team, Beverly 118.  Prevail quickly gave up four hangs in a row to go down 4-1 but battled back to win the half.  They quickly padded their lead in the beginning of the second half but let 118 battle back into the game to finish at 11-8.  Prevail now had to face the team that rudely welcomed them to the tournament with a 16-8 loss.  Toronto made quick work of Prevail in the first half and took an 8-1 lead.  Things did not look promising for the team as they battled back to 9-3 at the half.  When asked what happened at the half time break to turn things around, Brandon Short replied, " We just have heart...we dug deep and beat the odds."  Considering the odds they had beat to overcome Kingston in the shoot out win, there was little or no luck left in the tank.  The guys came out huge though in the second half dropping only two flags to Toronto and adding 9 of their own including the game winning point with 33 seconds left to go on a Toronto Major.  Prevail had made the finals and was on a roll.  Now they had to not only overcome Impact Kids, but they were also facing fatigue.  They had just finished back to back battles against the best teams in the CXBL and now were facing the reigning champions with only twenty minutes to get refreshed.  But the Prevail boys had been waiting for this game since May when they fell to the Kids in an Event 1 thriller.  Prevail spotted the Kids two hangs then took control of the game, taking advantage of a streak of penalties, and putting as many as 7 flags between them.  Prevail took their first Richmond Cup championship 15-10.  We are proud of you boys!  You showed tremendous heart and determination.  You overcame the odds and Prevailed!!!

We’d like to thank all those who supported us through this season and through the years before.  We’d like to thank all the players and the effort they put into this season.  You ALL made this possible and are deserving of the title we won.  We’d like to send a special thanks to our captain and leader on the field, Darcy Schlichenmayer.  You have put a tremendous amount of time and effort into this team this season and in building the parts over the years before now.  Congratulations.  Thank you also to Mike Paxson, Brandon Short, Greg Siewers for taking the time in their busy schedules to come up to Canada and play with us.  Finally, I want to personally thank Derek for his tireless efforts for this team.  He has dedicated his heart and soul to this sport and this team.  He has probably had a few sleepless nights trying to make this all possible and work out.  Thanks for all you’ve done Derek!  Congratulations Prevail!
